What Are The Symptoms of Heavy Metal Poisoning?
In document ID2245 on the EMIS website, Dr Gurvinder Rull states that “Heavy metal poisoning is rare in the UK, even in industries where there is an increased risk”. (http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Heavy-Metal-Poisoning.htm)
There is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that this is no longer the case- that we are all being poisoned by heavy metals, regardless of the industry that we work in, or factors like social class or geography. Our world is toxic and we are becoming poisoned just by living in it.
Countless studies from all over the world are coming to the same startling conclusion- that we are all toxic, and that each one of us carries a toxic burden that is at the very least harmful to our health.
What are the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning?
Heavy metal poisoning and its’ symptoms take many forms. Often people just say that “something is not right” or the symptoms can seem unrelated. If you have recently been to the doctor and they cannot find out what is wrong with you, despite numerous tests, there is a possibility that you may be suffering from heavy metal poisoning. Here is a list of symptoms:
Cardiovascular Increased or irregular heartbeats; faster pulse; faintness; chest pain; hand redness or blueness.
Ear, nose & throat Nasal congestion; sneezing; itchy runny nose; post-nasal drip; sore, dry or tickling cough; itchy palate; hoarseness; hacking cough; pressure, ringing or popping in ears; earache; intermittent deafness; dizziness; loss of balance.
Eyes Blurred vision; pain in eyes; crossing of eyes; light sensitivity; twitching; drooping or swollen eyelids; redness and swelling of inner angle of lower lid.
Gastrointestinal Dry mouth; increased salivation; canker sores; stinging tongue; belching; reflux; difficulty in swallowing or heartburn; indigestion; nausea and vomiting; rumbling or pain in abdomen; cramps; diarrhoea; itchy or burning rectum
Genitourinary Frequent, urgent or painful urination; poor bladder control, vaginal itching or discharge.
Musculoskeletal Fatigue; generalised muscular weakness; muscle and joint pain; stiffness; soreness; backache; neck and muscle spasm; generalised spasticity.
Nervous Headache or migraine; compulsively sleepy, drowsy, groggy, slow, sluggish or dull; depression, anxiety; mood swings; restlessness; head feels full or enlarged; feeling inebriated; floating; poor concentration, poor memory; feeling of separateness or apartness from others; stammering or stuttering speech.
Respiratory Shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; mucus formation in bronchial tubes.
Skin Itching, burning, flushing, pallor; warmth, coldness; tingling; excessive sweating; hives; blisters; blotches, red spots, pimples.

According to Dr Patricia Baillie- Hamilton, Ph.D, in her book Toxic Overload, common sources of toxic heavy metals are:
• Airborne metal particles near mines, smelters, and metal processing or heavy engineering works – (all metals)
• Carbonated beverages in aluminium cans – (aluminium)
• Cooking utensils- (aluminium)
• Dental amalgam (fillings) – (mercury, tin, copper, silver)
• Electroplating- (most metals)
• Food additives – (aluminium)
• Food contaminants – (mercury, lead, TBT, arsenic, cadmium in seafood and shellfish)
• Glass- (lead, antimony)
• Lead building materials, cable covering, and roofing
• Lead plumbing (lead pipes and copper pipes joined by lead solder)
• Nickel plating for soldering in alloys, photoelectric cells, and storage batteries- (cadmium is also found in batteries)
• Paint additive- (lead, TBT, cadmium, antimony)
• Product containing lead- lead crystal, pottery with lead ceramic glazes, stained glass windows joined with strips of lead, old painted toys)
• Tap water- (aluminium is used as a cleaning agent in water processing plants)
• Vaccine additives (mercury, aluminium)
Dr Baillie- Hamilton also states that health problems associated with mercury poisoning include:
Excessive flow of saliva
Inflammation of mouth and gums
Irritability
Jerky gait
Kidney damage
Learning disabilities
Loosening of teeth
Muscle tremors
Nervousness
Personality changes
Pins and needles
Spasms of extremities
Swelling of the salivary glands
Health problems associated with aluminium poisoning include:
Abnormal EEG
Alzheimer’s disease
Anemia
Blood clots
Bone disorders, including fractures
Coarse tremors
Heart attack
Learning disabilities
Mental status change
Speech disturbances
Stroke
Health problems associated with lead poisoning include:
Anorexia
Antisocial behaviour
Convulsions
Loss of IQ in children or thinking abilities in adults
Mental confusion
Nausea
Paralysis
Severe abdominal pain and anemia
Visual disturbances
Vomiting.
Other symptoms that have been attributed to heavy metal poisoning are insomnia, mental confusion, chronic fatigue, hyper-activity, suicidal tendencies, tinnitus, chemical sensitivity, joint pain and low or high blood pressure.
There are evidently some professions that carry higher risks than others- miners, dry cleaners, factory workers using high quantities of chemicals, dentists and dental technicians, farmers, and farm labourers, workers in the nuclear industry and anyone who is exposed to heavy metals on a regular basis.
If you recognise yourself amongst those symptoms of heavy metal poisoning, there is a chance that you, like so many others, are suffering from an overloaded system as a result of taking in too many toxic heavy metals.
So many of us are either unaware of the effect that these toxic heavy metals have on our health, or are overwhelmed when we learn the truth and do not know what to do next.
If the average adult is now estimated to carry between 200 and 350 toxic chemicals in our system simply because we eat, drink and breathe in a toxic world, the chances are that heavy metal poisoning is in fact common, and not rare, in the UK and elsewhere. The area of concern is that we do not as yet have any understanding of how the toxins react when they combine in such great numbers in our system and how this will impact our health in the future.
